Jesse Griese Memorial - Skutt HS
Millard South: 2nd place

Comments: The Patriots wrestled well on the day
getting 14 wrestlers in the top 4 at Skutt. To
date the team has placed all 14 wrestlers in
every tournament this year. This is a testament
to the depth of the team. However, the team ran
into tough competition in the finals winning
only 1 of 10 finals matches. The finals round
was a good learning experience for the Patriots
heading into districts and state. Mitch Brown
continues leading the team having won every
tournament this season. 10 Patriot wrestlers
passed the 25 win mark during the Skutt
Tournament.

January 18 dual vs. Grand Island:
Score: Millard South 64 Grand Island 3

Comments: We wrestled pretty well for the most
part in the dual. The only match we lost was a
squeeker at 103. The win gives the Patriots a
13-0 dual record for the year. Leading the way
for the team were our pair of number 1 ranked
wrestlers; both Clayden McKim and Mitch Brown
earned pins to lead the team.

Comments:
We were very fortunate to come back from a tough
Metro win to do so well at Burke. We were able to
push 12 wrestlers in to the finals at Burke and all
14 wrestlers finished in the top 4. Josh
Novak and Nate Stender each advanced through very difficult
brackets to win championships on the day. Derek
Schave also turned in a solid performance defeating
the metro runner-up to get to the finals.

Metro Conference Championships
Millard South: 1st Place 290 pts.

Comments: The Patriots were able
to win their 4th straight Metro Title outdueling
a very hot Creighton Prep. In doing so, the
Patriots set a Metro scoring record with 290
points. 4 straight titles also ties a Metro
record as well. All 14 Patriots finished in the
top 5 which is outstanding. What stands out from
the tournament is that the team won 11 of 14
medal round matches. The team also continues a
great pinning tradition with 30 pins during the
two day tournament. Several individuals had
outstanding tournaments. Derek Schave moved into
the lineup from JV to earn 3rd place at 145.
Nick Meneely had a great tournament finishing
2nd by the narrowest of margins. Mitch Brown
pinned his way through the tournament pinning
the second ranked wrestler in the finals.

Millard
West is always the first real Class A measuring
stick of the year. This year would be no different.
The team performed well at Millard West finishing
1st for the 3rd straight year. 6 of the top 10 teams
in class A were at Millard West this year, and the
team finished over 100 points better than 2nd place
Columbus. All 14 wrestlers placed in the top 6; a
mixup in the bracketing kept the team from having
all 14 in the top 4. Along the way, new varsity
heavyweight, Zac Christo finished 2nd in his first
varsity tournament performance. Greg Garcia topped
the 100 win mark also.

The
Patriots head into Christmas break having
dominated the Ralston Invite. 11 champions is
the most Millard South has ever had in
tournament action. 13 finalists was also a
fantastic result. Most likely the number of
finalists would have been 14 had it not been for
an untimely injury. Josh Novak, Branden Miklas,
and Nick Meneely each earned their first career
varsity championship.

Coaches Note: The team wrestled pretty well
against solid competition at the Nebraska duals. We
were able to bring home our 4th consecutive dual
championship. In doing so, we won our duals by an
average of 68-8 which is pretty good. This is
quality mat time for our wrestlers. We use this to
see what we need to work on before the January meat
grinder. Overall on the year we are 10-0 in dual
competition.
