The Patriots had an outstanding weekend winning the
State Title for the 4th consecutive year. Only one
other team in modern wrestling history has matched
this run in class A history. From 1979-1982,
Columbus also won four consecutive titles.
During this year's tournament, the Patriots were
able to bring home 11 total medals of which 4 were
gold. The Patriots turned in the second best scoring
count in class A history behind the record setting
2006 Patriot team. This is the first year that the
Patriots put 6 wrestlers into the finals setting a
school record in the process.
Over the past 4 years, Millard South has put
together 43 medals which can't even be matched by
the awesome Skutt machine. In the last five years,
the Patriots have put together 50 total medals for a
five year average of 10 medals per year. This medal
count is unprecedented in modern day wrestling
history. In the last decade the Patriots have also
put together six total state trophies making MS the
TEAM of the decade.
This year's team put together an amazing run at
state leading the race wire to wire over a very
tough Kearney Team. Jake Besch had to defeat the
5th, 4th, 3rd and 2nd place medalist en route to his
championship; this may never have happened before in
wrestling history. His Championship match over Gil
Algood of Millard North was probably the best match
in the class A finals.
Nate Stender was able to become a 2x state champion
with a pin in the finals. Nate sets a Millard South
wrestling record for wins in a year at 45. Jake
Miller and Morgan Denson both dominated their
opponents while winning individual state titles.
Overall the team wrestled their best tournament of
the year at state. Leaving QWEST on Saturday, there
was no doubt who the best team in class A was for
2007-08!

Millard South A-2 District

The Patriots turned in an outstanding performance at
Districts outdistancing 2nd place Lincoln East by
over 100 points. In the process, the Patriots set
two new district records. The Patriots finished with
23 pins on the day to set a new class A state
record. The old record had been 22 pins. The
Patriots also set a record with 10 district
champions. In the process, the Patriots are sending
13 wrestlers to state. A total of 12 wrestlers
wrestled in the finals. Some key matches on the day
pitted Josh Novak against the second rated wrestler
in the state. Novak was able to win a 7-3 victory in
the process. Branden Miklas was able to defeat a
wrestler who had beaten him earlier in the year.
Danny Marcum upset the 2nd seeded wrestler in
earning a spot in the finals. Overall, the Patriots
up in their best effort of the year.

Greise SkyHawk Invite
Millard South 3rd place 172.5
points

The Skutt tournament was by far the hardest
competition the Patriots have had to face this
season. Skutt dominated the team competition with
Boys Town following in second place. The Patriots
had to outlast a fast charging Prep team to finish
in third place. All in all, 12 of the 14 Patriot
wrestlers placed in the tournament. While the team
didn't register an individual champion, Jimmy
Shinkle and Morgan Denson lost nailbiters in the
finals. Having solid days for the team were Dan
Marcum and Branden Miklas who each finished third in
tough weight classes. The team had to do without
Heavy, Zac Christo, but filled in with Large King
who moved from 215 (normally) to Heavy. King
registered 4th place and narrowly missed out on a
3rd place finish.

Burke
Invite
Millard South 1st Place 261.5

The Patriots followed a very
emotional win at Metro with a solid effort at the
Burke Invite. 7 of the 14 Patriots earned 1st place
honors, while all 14 finished in the top 5 of the
tournament. Dan Marcum finished with his first
championship of the season and Morgan Denson topped
the 100 win mark for his career and he is only a Jr.
The team outdistanced Burke by nearly 100 points in
winning the championship. Josh Novak was winner of
the fastest pin award at :12. Millard South has now
won the fastest pin award for five years running.

Metro
Conference Tournament
Millard South 1st place 257 pts

The Patriots were able to win the
Metro Conference Tournament for the 5th consecutive
year to set a new All Time Metro record. No team in
the history of the Metro has been able to win 5
straight. Omaha Westside was able to win four in a
row in the 1970's, but not even the vaunted teams of
Omaha North in the 1990's could get four in a row.
Five in a row should stand out as a testament to the
depth of the program in the last decade. In 2000 the
team finished second, and then in 2002 the Patriots
brought home their first Metro Championship. This
was followed by another runner-up finish and now the
5 year streak. In the last decade the team has
finished as Metro Champion 6 times while finishing
second twice.
Individually, the team made significant improvements
from the Millard West Tournament to the Metro
Tournament. 12 of 14 Patriots finished in the top 6
and 8 wrestlers finished in the finals. The biggest
improvement came in the medal round match
production. In that area, the team won 9 of 13
matches after winning only 5 medal round matches a
week ago.

Millard
West Tournament
Millard South 1st Place 314 points

Typically, the Millard West
Tournament is billed as a mini-state in class A, and
this year was no different. Six of the top 10 teams
in the state battled it out for top honors. Besides
Millard South, the tournament featured Omaha North
(4), Columbus (5), Grand Island (6), Lincoln East
(7), and Ralston (10). The Patriots outdistanced 2nd
place Grand Island by 100.5 points in claiming 1st
place. 10 Patriots finished in the finals with 5 of
those winning 1st place. Two Patriot wrestlers
(Ashton Caniglia and TJ Seehausen) wrestled
unattached in the tournament with Seehausen
finishing in 4th place. The Patriots showed
considerable depth as 13 of 14 wrestlers placed in
the top 8. For the Patriots, this is the fourth
consecutive Millard West Title.

13 out of 14 wrestlers placed in the
top 3 at the Blair Invite. The Patriots finished the
day with 227 total points, nearly 75 points better
than second placed Sioux City North.
As a team, our first four weight
classes continue to wrestle lights out. An
outstanding effort on the day came from Mike Mumaugh.
Mumaugh is in his first year as a varsity wrestler;
he also only started wrestling as a Freshman at MS.
On the day he beat an Qualifier in the semi's and in
the finals beat a returning state placer. Altogether
the Patriots had 9 in the finals to pace the day. |

earning 4th place in class B. Wins for Millard South

Preseason: UNK Team Camp 2007
Millard South Wrestling had a
change of pace this summer and attended the
University of Nebraska at Kearney Wrestling Team
Camp. The team had been attending the Lincoln
Team Camp for the last 8 years, but the coaches
decided that a new direction and some different
faces were needed to complete the summer
training session.
Coach Denson, Edmundson and Novak took a strong
team of 19 athletes to Kearney, July 9-11; to
attend the camp and get as many of the wrestlers
on the mat before the fall sports season
training began. It was a huge success. Not only
did a number of the kids who will be competing
for a varsity spot attend, but there was also a
strong group of young up and coming wrestlers.
Young and old worked together and in the end,
the team was successful with winning the team
duel tournament. The Patriots finished with a
8-0-1 record, though the tie came from a duel
that did not affect the tournament. In the end,
the boys looked very strong and gave the coaches
glimpse of success for the next season.
The camp was only three days, but the boys had
very little down time. The returning varsity
wrestlers like Morgan Denson, Branden Miklas,
Nate Stender, Josh Novak, Derek Shave and Zac
Christo were great examples for showing
dedication and discipline for the younger
wrestlers to follow. They all competed at a high
level and saw some outstanding competition to
improve their wrestling skills, showing the rest
why they are the varsity.
Not to be outdone, the JV squad from the
2006-2007 season also came to camp to show that
they will be pursuing for a varsity spot. Mike
Mumaugh, Michael Bos, Jordy Tonjes, Joe Kayl,
Jimmy DiCola, Tyler Harris, Chris Babb, Large
King and Cody Semroska all worked and competed
hard to show off their talents. For most, it was
an eye opening experience stepping up to the
next level and competing against varsity
competition. Most came away from camp knowing
what they need to do on and off the mat to make
the jump to the next level.
There were also some newcomers to the team that
added to team dynamics in a very positive way.
Justin Fenton and Sheldon Garcia, two incoming
freshman and Derek Roach, a transfer sophomore,
also bought into the Patriot philosophy of never
giving up and wrestled well to help the team win
some key duels. Also, transfer Junior ,Jake
Besch, joined the team showing why he is a two
time returning state placer.
In the end, the boys showed heart and
determination, wrestling tough competition from
Nebraska, Kansas and Colorado. They handled the
pressure of trying to stay focused for the
duration of the camp, learned some great
technique from our camp coach and former
Patriot, Joe Ellenberger. Joe is fresh off of
earning All American honors for UNK this past
year, so he was eager to share that winning
attitude with the Patriots.
The camp ended with a very heated duel between
the Patriots and their rivals, Kearney / Kearney
Catholic. The match-ups for the duel gave no
advantage to anyone, forcing the team veterans
and newcomers to dig deep to find that inner
strength to come out on top. The duel started
out as an epic battle, and in the end the “NEVER
DIE ATTITUDE” of the Patriots came forward with
Sheldon Garcia getting a key pin to put the
Patriots in the drivers seat and accelerating
the team momentum so much that the Patriots
never looked back. The boys truly showed how
much they care about their team and their
dedication to being the best, even if it is just
summer wrestling.
In closing, it was a real pleasure working with
this team over the course of the summer; on the
mat and in the weight room. They are working
hard on and off the mat and truly showing that
summer wrestling makes winter champions.
