Summary:

The Patriots traveled to state in the hopes of keeping a string of top 10 finishes alive. The string dated back to the 2002 season. The last time the Patriots finished outside the top 10 was a 17th place finish in 2001 which gives the program a 10 year run in the top 10, and even better than that, in the top 5.

This year the Patriots would head to state with a smaller number than usual, 7, in the quest to finish in the top 10. When the smoke cleared, 3 out of 7 wrestlers would finish on the podium. The Hi-Lite of the tournament would be a Championship finish by 182 lb Connor Barrientos who would finish 4-0 at the tournament. Barrientos would win his championship match by the slimmest of margins winning by a score of 5-4 over Ben Goodwin of Lincoln Pius X who came into the championship with a 36-0 record.

Freeman Coleman finished his Junior campaign with a 3rd place finish going 4-1 at State. Coleman would lose by the narrowest of margins to Jose Leon of Columbus on a questionable call in the semi-finals. Freeman would come back to win his last two matches by pin giving him 4 pins in the tournament.

The surprise of the tournament might well go to Sophomore, Alex Mendez, who fought back from losing his first match to finish 5th place at state. Mendez would have to upset highly ranked, Keygan Foster of Central just to get a medal, and then he would beat nemesis, Tony O’Connell of Papillion LaVista to get 5th place.

By the end of state, the team had garnered a 12th place finish just 3.5 points out of a top 10 finish.

Comments:

“We really wanted to keep the streak alive, but sometimes things just don’t go the right way,” Said Assistant Coach, Alan Marvin. “We were really happy to get a state champion, and it felt good to see Mendez rise to the occasion.”

“I knew it was going to be a tall order for finish in the top 10,” Said Head Coach, Doug Denson. “We just didn’t have a lot of team depth, and in class A, you need numbers to get near the top 5. As is, we made a run at it, but just fell a bit short.”

“We got off to a bad start which didn’t make things easy for us,” Said Assistant Head Coach, Jay Meneely. “Momentum is a key thing to winning in athletics. You get some momentum behind you and good things happen.”

“Even though we didn’t get the finish we wanted, I think things are looking really good for next year,” Said Assistant Coach, Nate Olson. “Our younger kids can look at how Mendez did at state and know they can do the same!”

Summary:

The A-3 district tournament held at Lincoln Southwest High School turned out to be some of the toughest competition of the year for the Millard South Patriots. When the smoke cleared, the team could only garner 7 state qualifiers; of those 7, six of them won their medal round matches to help push the Patriots past Millard North for 3rd place in the team standings. The team crowned 3 champions on the day with the surprise champion coming from Tobias Harter who came out of the 3rd seed to win the tournament. Connor Barrientos was able to avenge his only loss of the year while pushing past the 40 win mark on the year. Barrientos is now a 4X state qualifier and has 123 career wins. Freeman Coleman was able to cruise through the tournament pinning his way through.

“We had a pretty rough day overall,” Said Head Coach, Doug Denson. “Our goals are always pretty high here at South. We want to qualify all of our guys every year.”

“Our guys battled hard all day long,” Said Assistant Head Coach, Jay Meneely. “We were close to pushing more numbers over, but just fell a little short. We will have to carry on the battle at state with our 7 qualifiers.”

“On a good note, our 7 guys who qualified, all wrestled well. We had a great final round to pull back into third place,” Said Assistant Coach, Alan Marvin.

“We were pretty happy that our state qualifiers wrestled well,” Said Head Coach, Doug Denson. “Getting 3 champions is pretty satisfying.”

The JV Patriots attended the Wahoo Bishop Neumann Varsity tournament on Saturday, January 28^th, 2012.  One of only 2 JV teams there, the Patriots had great efforts from everyone on the team, and they came away from the 6-team round robin tournament as the champions.  This was quite the accomplishment and team effort due to the fact that 3 weight classes were open.  Austin Petznick also filled in nicely for the injured and starting JV 170 pounder, Roger Faust, by winning 3 matches and placing 3^rd.

The Patriot Freshmen attended the Bryan Metro Freshmen Wrestling Tournament on Monday, January 30^th.  Although no team scores were kept, all wrestlers performed well.  Four wrestlers won 3 matches on the day while four others won 2 matches.  Zach DeLoa won his first 2 matches to make it to the finals where he lost in a last second scramble to a kid who pinned him earlier in the year.  Cole Fisher’s only loss of the day was to fellow teammate Austin Petznick in the semi finals, but that didn’t stop him from earning 3 pins on the day.
